Careful choices for success

As my birthday approaches next month and having spent the last three months in a cast and then a brace for a broken wrist, I realize making my garden easier to tend is imperative. Because I love working outside and enjoy my garden, I want to be able to care for it. Spending time in a green space is great for our health so I want to reduce the number of tasks that will be more difficult as the time passes.

Mighty oaks

Has a towering tree standing alone caught your eye? It's likely to be an Oregon White Oak, Quercus garryana, the only oak native to this part of Oregon. Some of these slow-growing oaks may live to be 500 years old and can eventually command a space over 100 feet tall and sixty feet wide, with roots growing far beyond the boundaries of its massive branches.

Bob Wayt

Bob Wayt, who served as communications director at THPRD for 11+ years before retiring in 2018, passed away on October 29. His passing was sudden and unexpected. Bob was well known for his marvelous photography skills, his deep and abiding love and commitment to his wife of 44 years, Karen, their children, and grandchildren. Bob had a warm and enthusiastic presence and was well known for his gift for photography.

Smoke in the air—not just in the summer!

A crackling fire may make you feel snug and homey, but it's a significant health threat. Many Washington County households use wood burning stoves for heating in winter and others enjoy fires just for their coziness and ambiance. What many people don't realize is that, when a lot of people are burning wood in their homes, the cumulative effect on air quality can be similar to a wildfire. It's time to rethink how—and whether—we burn wood.

Why the white bike?

"Ghost bikes" are a traditional way of honoring and memorializing a cyclist killed by a motor vehicle. Here in Cedar Mill you may have noticed a white bike attached to a pole at the intersection of Cornell and Old Barnes Rd., near Sunset Veterinary.

"A Better Red" increases Red Line airport service. The project will extend the MAX Red Line west into Hillsboro and Beaverton to serve 10 more stations. The Red Line currently only runs between the Beaverton Transit Center and PDX.

We asked James M. Coley, Lieutenant – Patrol Division, Washington County Sheriff's Office to help us understand how the Sheriff's Office responds to homeless folks in the county, and what residents should do if they encounter campers.

Jim Bauer is a descendant of one of Cedar Mill's early families. He shared his recollections of the Henry & Erna Bauer house that is slated for imminent demolition on Saltzman to make way for a new subdivision.

Japanese Beetle eradication update

The Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) is a serious invasive insect pest that threatens Oregon and the western United States. The largest infestation of Japanese beetles ever found in the state was detected in 2016 around Cedar Mill, Bonny Slope, Oak Hills, and Bethany.

History in the News: Cedar Mill Historical Society is dissolved but our history lives on

In July, I received messages from all the board members of the Cedar Mill Historical Society that they were resigning. Since that time, I learned that several of them were forming a new group to focus on the JQA Young House. Since I am interested in the whole story of Cedar Mill, I decided to dissolve the 501c3 and just focus on having fun with sharing our stories.

How does our power grid work?

Electricity provides the energy for many of our daily activities—from each flick of a light switch to charging our devices, we rely on the power grid to live efficiently. Portland General Electric (PGE) is the electricity provider for Cedar Mill, and through their chain model of infrastructure, they ensure that we have consistent access to power.

Art World School was established as Jiao Ying School in 1997 by artist Jiao Ying. It was previously located in downtown Portland and Tigard, and the new location in the Bethany area was established in 2018.

Gardening in the drought

Looking around my garden, I am noticing the plants that are damaged from the heat event that we all endured recently. My water bill increased several times the last few months since I turned on my sprinkling system.

Living bouquets in containers

Because I have so many perennials and shrubs in my garden, I like to grow annuals in large containers—15-20 inches—because they don't dry out so quickly, and slugs have a harder time accessing them.

With construction finally underway on the Life Time Fitness complex west of Cedar Hills Blvd. (CHB) south of Barnes Road, we have been receiving questions about this development and future plans for the remaining Peterkort properties in the vicinity. The 2020 election was proof that voting by mail is safe and efficient. We here in Oregon just sailed through—mailing our ballots in, as usual, with no lies about voting fraud. A recent Pew Research Center survey shows an overwhelming 91 percent of respondents have a favorable view of United States Postal Service (USPS), higher than any other federal agency.

Steve Frame, 1957-2021

Stephen Curtis Frame passed away April 24, 2021 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was a was born and raised in Cedar Mill and lived there all his life, with his wife Marcia. An avid fisherman, he loved catching river and ocean fish.

Earth Month editorial

With some effects of climate change already upon us, we challenge Washington County to view all their actions through the lens of climate.

If we don't stop contributing to the problem, our efforts at achieving equity will be meaningless. The powerful will find ways to avoid the consequences, and the rest of us will have to adapt to a planet that may not support the life we want for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren.

Washington County should establish a Climate Challenge Task Force to advise all county divisions on how to establish goals, make climate friendly decisions, and implement sustainable practices. The Task Force needs to include representatives from commerce, industry, development, science, and community organizations.

We understand that it will take time and effort, but we must begin now. If you agree, send a message to your Washington County Commissioner and to the Chair.

County leaves ped-bike safety on the table

People who want safer routes for bicycles and pedestrians look to Washington County to, if not build them, at least encourage them. In some cases, a developer is required to build them when new houses go in.

Target application is approved, turn lane can stay for now

Washington County has approved the application to allow Target to move into the former Bales grocery location. There was considerable anxiety over a possible Land Use and Transportation (LUT) requirement to close the left turn lane from Cornell into the lot, but in a decision sent out on March 25, LUT has decided it can remain "on a temporary basis until such time as alternative access meeting the access spacing standards becomes available—providing that [they] continue to operate safely."

You can save seed from heirloom vegetables that will look and taste like the original plants. But be careful, hybrids may produce sterile seed or none at all. If they do yield viable seed it will produce plants like one or the other parent plant. In other words you get inconsistent results.

If you are registered to vote in Oregon, you'll receive a ballot in your mail around the end of April, followed by the Voters Pamphlet a few days later. April 27 is the last day to register or update your registration.

Continuing the "Beetle Battle"

The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) is continuing its multi-year effort to eradicate the Japanese beetle, an invasive and destructive insect pest in your neighborhood in 2021. Thanks to your support and cooperation, we have had success in reducing the Japanese beetle populations in Oregon, but more efforts are required.

This article pertains not to OSU sports teams, but instead to North America's largest rodent, a common resident of Cedar Mill and Oregon's state animal. The American beaver (Castor canadensis) was trapped almost to extinction across America by the 1800s, due largely to demand for beaver pelts.

Portland Clean Air is a nonprofit that has been working for seven years to study and promote public understanding of government agency industrial air pollution data, and advocate for prevention. Sunset students tackle climate change

Climate change has been a looming threat to us for many years. With the short amount of time we have left to make a change, we need to buy more time for permanent, systemic solutions. Though climate change is a difficult problem to solve, there are simple ways for us as a community to delay its destructive progress.

A package is delivered: you are home, but the delivery person did not knock or ring the bell, so you don't realize it is sitting outside your front door. Or worse, you receive a text that your package was delivered, open your front door, and find nothing.

Japanese Beetle eradication update

In 2016, a number of highly destructive and invasive insects were discovered in a few locations in Cedar Mill. The Japanese Beetle has devastated agriculture and home gardens in the East and Midwest, and the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) wanted to get ahead of the infestation before the same thing happened here.

CMBA helps bring musical bench to Cedar Mill

Katie Smith is the Community Outreach coordinator for the Cedar Mill Business Association, in addition to being Sales Manager of The Ackerly at Timberland. CMBA was looking for a project to replace the hanging flower baskets (since funding had dwindled), when she learned about Tualatin Valley Creates (TVC) and got in touch with Raziah Roushan, Executive Director.

A public involvement process is underway to collect community opinions on the proposed alternatives for improving the north end of Saltzman, between Bayonne at the top of the ridge, to Laidlaw.

John 'Buz' Walker III, October 18, 1932 – July 15, 2020

Walker Garbage Service has served Cedar Mill businesses and residents since 1948. Buz Walker's parents were in the dairy business with his mother's Egger family. John Walker Jr., a German immigrant from the Volga River region in Russia, entered the garbage hauling business and bought what would later become Walker Garbage and Recycling, Inc.

John Fox, 1939-2020

On July 12, 2020, Cedar Mill lost an impactful member of our community. A lifelong liberal, John Foz coped with the 2016 passing of his wife Carol by throwing himself into political activism in his community, Cedar Mill.

ODA continues multi-year effort to eradicate Japanese beetle

The Japanese beetle is an invasive insect that has been causing large-scale destruction to garden plants and agricultural crops in the Eastern and Midwestern United States. If this beetle establishes in Oregon, it would be a serious threat to our thriving nursery, turf grass, and specialty crop industries.

New Beaverton City Charter approved by voters

Beaverton voters approved a new city charter during the May 19 election. The Beaverton Charter of 2021 went into effect on June 18 and becomes operational on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

Helen Fohl 1920-2020

Helen Lorrine Fohl was in her 100th year, just two months shy of celebrating her first century, when she passed away. Her loss to the Ackerly left empty shoes just too large to even try to fill. Her wonderful wit, her wise insight were blessings to us all, noted one neighbor. She added, "I shall miss you more than anyone could know."

According to Wendy Gordon, Lead Public Information Officer, Washington County Emergency Operations Center, Washington County will follow the governor's plan on when and how to reopen. On April 14, Brown's office introduced a "Framework for Reopening Oregon" that outlines the prerequisites for the safe way to move forward.
